1447381DE Advanced Task Killer

Android App Review:

Features:

Advanced Task Killer Android App allows you to stop running background processes or apps in memory. The Android operating system can run multiple apps in memory concurrently which currently is its own Gift and Curse. Cursed… as some processes and apps can bring an Android phone performance to a crawl. By default, you can’t easily close open applications or running background processes unless you go to:

Settings » Applications » Manage applications » (wait for list to load…) » (select app) » Force Stop ;-(

Not exactly convenient then…

The alternative is to download Advanced Task Killer from the market and use that instead. The name says “Advanced” task killer but it does everything TasKiller does; stops background processes and apps, specify an “Ignore List”, or kill all apps running with one button (at a higher cost without a home screen widget).

Usefulness:

This app is very useful, I would even recommend for new users who have no clue why their Android phone may be sluggish.

Ease of Use:

Advanced Task Killer Android App is simple and intuitive.

Frequently Used:

Could potentially be used multiple times daily or sparingly as needed.

Interface:

The user interface is simple yet intuitive.

How to Announce Bad News

It’s inevitable that sometimes you need to make an announcement or publish a press release that contains bad news. There are several ways to approach this. If you take the time to prepare a good statement you can minimise the damage. We will look at each of the methods, ending with the preferred option.

(1) The “Spin” Method

Widely associated with politicians and less-than-honest business people, the spin method means putting a “positive spin” on the story. Present facts as though they are good news even if they aren’t. Rather than presenting negative statistics, turn them around and make them positive.

For example, one of these statements sounds a lot worse than the other:

  1. “The study found an alarming 10% contamination rate in the area.”
  2. “The study found that 90% of the area is free from contamination.”

(2) The “Comparison” Method

In this method the bad news is down-played by comparing it to something even worse. For example:

“Although the area has some contamination, the situation is not as bad as it could have been, and is much better than similar areas in other catchments.”

(3) The “Sandwich” Method

This is generally the preferred option if you want to appear honest and accurate. The idea is to “sandwich” the bad news between two items of good news. For example:

“The recent environmental impact review has resulted in an exciting new policy of resource management which is due to be implemented next month. At this stage the area has a 10% contamination rate. The goal is to reduce that figure to 5% within two years and less than 1% within eight years.”

In this way you are being completely up-front about the situation without making it depressing. The initial impression is good news, followed by the bad news, then ending on a positive outlook for the future.

Tip: Never begin with bad news! This makes a very nasty first impression that is difficult to recover from. The first sentence sets the tone for whatever follows, so start on a positive note.

Top 10 android setup tasks for a new android user, with steps & pics for Epic 4G – Galaxy S phoneEpic 4G is a little pricey, but is currently the best phone money can buy, available on Sprint from the Aug 31st. I might be biased – its my next phone, but look for yourself. Pictures after the break.

Features that future proof Epic 4G for the next two years:

Look for Clear to offer the Epic 4G in a few months. If you are in its coverage area and plan to cut cables to use 4G as your primary broadband connection, I’d say wait a few months.

We also covered other best value Android phones in the US if you are interested.

In any case, the Android set up tips after the break should help you kickstart any shiny new android phone including the Droid family, Evo 4G, Galaxy S or other Motorola, Samsung and HTC android phones.

    • Export contacts to CSV, import to Gmail contacts. After that,
    • Sign in to your phone with your Google account, if you haven’t done that yet.
    • Browse to Contacts>Settings>Display options>Select “Only contacts with phones”, and also Google>Manually select all groups. Then sync.
    • While you are at it, use the Email app to setup your school/office email and install Gtasks to sync your todo lists with Google tasks. Use IMAP or Exchange settins to ensure that email read status is synced to your phone too.
  2.

  3. Facebook and Twitter:
    • Install the Facebook and Twitter apps.
    • Select to import data on your existing contacts. Pictures and other address data are the automagically added to your contacts.
    • Set Facebook and Twitter to update once every 4 hrs to prevent your friends from draining your battery. The Facebook sync setting could be in Contacts>Settings>Accounts or in the app itself
  4.

  5. Home screen:
    • Install ADW launcher to get a better home screen.
    • Select ADW launcher to open by default when the Home button is pressed.
    • Set the number of screens to 3 and apps to scroll vertically. Thats feels a lot better on the Galaxy S phones.
    • Set desktop rows to 5. Theres a lot more screenspace on large screen phones.
    • Select fade app labels for some nice animation.
    • If you want to reset the launcher for any reason, browse to Settings>Manage apps>ADW launcher> Reset defaults.
  6.

  7. Home screen widgets:
    • Install Beautiful widgets, one of the best Time and Weather widgets.
    • Try out some clock skins and pick the one you like.
    • Tap on Time to open alarm, Date to open calendar and Weather to open a nice animated weather widget.
    • Galaxy S phones have the WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G, enable/disable buttons in the notification area, but you might want to place Power Control, an android standard widget, on your home screen and have better control over your battery.
    • While disabling the GPS, enable Geo location using WiFi to retrieve current location without sacrificing battery power.
  8.

  9. Get your phone back if you loose it:
    • Install Contact Owner.
    • Enable the security pattern in settings,
    • Setup Google Voice if needed
    • Add your email and the Google Voice number to your contact. You can use a friends number instead too.
    • Get Contact Owner to show your email and the phone number on the password screen, so the finder can reach you to give back the phone.
    • Also, enable Latitude in maps to track the location of your phone.
  10.

  11. Find your background:
  12.

  13. Change phone settings automatically:
    • Install Timerrific
    • There are apps that use GPS or phone battery levels to change settings automatically, like Tasker and Power Manager
    • Timerrific is better though. It changes settings based on time/day and is nice to the battery.
    • Now you can set the phone to vibrate at office/school and turn off WiFi when not at home.
    • While you are at it, install No Signal Alert, so you don’t miss important calls. Your phone will let you know if it looses signal.
  14.

  15. Don’t type, scan:
    • Install the Barcode Scanner app
    • Scan any barcodes you see on the web or elsewhere using Barcode Scanner.
    • The app works on Google Product Search too, all you have to do is browse to it on you phone and click on the “Scan Barcode” button. Now you can compare prices on the go.

Track your weight using a WiFi scale

Withings, released a beta version of their Android app. Track and monitor your families’ weight curves on the go.

Its a wifi scale that automatically detects who’s on it and sends data to Withings.com. The weight and BMI charts can then be visualized on your phone, no PC needed.

Look for your security alarm, garage door opener, power meter and even your shoes to go this route soon.

Works nicely with other race & track tools like Runkeeper.
