SUMMARY: Limit your MSN Search results to webpages written in a particular language.
SUMMARY: Perform more powerful queries with MSN Search by filtering results containing certain unwanted keywords.
When performing searches with MSN Search involving words that have multiple meanings, you might wish to prevent the results from including webpages matching the word’s alternate meaning. There are also times where searching for a keyword or phrase brings up webpages involving the word’s most popular use, but not what you need at a particular time.
For example, if you want to search for information about sweet potatoes (nutrition information, how to grow them, etc), but you don’t care about recipes using the vegetable, you might perform a search for:
sweet potato
However, many of the results deal with recipes. To ignore results with the word “recipes”, just prefix it with a minus sign, i.e.:
sweet potato -recipes
You may also want to ignore the singular form of the word:
sweet potato -recipes -recipe
SUMMARY: Find webpages using MSN Search that link to multimedia or other document types.
There may be times where you need to find pages that contain links to files of a particular document or multimedia type. For example, you may want websites:
* relating to taxes, containing PDF files of tax documents
* relating to Sean Connery, containing links to Real Audio or Real Video multimedia files
To perform these kinds of searches with MSN Search, you can use the “contains:” keyword, followed by the file type that you wish websites to link to.
For the first example, let’s look for webpages with “1040″ (USA income taxes) containing PDF links:
1040 contains:pdf
Now, to look for webpages mentioning Sean Connery that link to multimedia files playable via RealPlayer:
“sean connery” contains:ram
